Purpose of Competition

To provide a safe environment for competitors to demonstrate their skills in Auto paint and prep as well as knowledge of proper procedures to follow.

Skills and Knowledge to be tested

Competitors will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of auto paint and prep procedures including.

Procedures to be Judge- 75%

  • Reading and Translating Technical Data Sheets on material being used in the competition site.
  • Sanding and repairing defects in plastic bumpers.
  • Following proper sequence when applying adhesion promoter, primer, sealer
  • Using paint mixing equipment properly
  • Accurately mixing paint products
  • Spraying Base coat and clear coat with proper handling techniques
  • Repairing Defects in painted panels

Safe work practices to be judges- 25%

  • Wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment throughout the competition
  • Being spatially aware of their surroundings
  • Identifying hazards and reading MSDS sheets for material being used

  • CSA Safety Approved footwear
  • P95 Paint Respirator
  • Nitrile disposable gloves
  • Paint suit
  • N95 Dust mask

  • 180-600 Grit orbital Sandpaper
  • 2K Putty
  • Auto PreClean solution
  • Wax and grease remover solution
  • Adhesion Promoter
  • Primer/Sealer
  • Base coat paint
  • Clear Coat
  • Polishing compound
  • Plastic Bumpers
  • Masking Tape
  • Masking Paper

Evaluation

Safety /25

Wearing PPE, Using MSDS sheets

Prep /20

Sanding plastic bumper, repairing defect in plastic bumper, applying adhesion promoter, primer/sealer

Refinishing /40

Finding TDS for products being used, Using the system to read ratios mix paint accurately, Spraying base coat and clear with proper handling

Fixing Paint Problems and Polishing /15

Fixing a run on a panel, Wet sanding a panel to reduce orange peel, followed by polishing to return panel to glossy finish

Safety

Safety is a priority at the Limestone Skills Competition. Any competitor can be removed from the competition site if safety standards are not met.
