Skills Competition 2024 (Elementary) - TV/Video Production (Team of 2)
Provide students with an opportunity to develop their understanding of TV and Video production, and to apply those practical skills in the creation of a media story.

Purpose
To provide students with an opportunity to develop their understanding of TV and Video production, and to apply those practical skills in the creation of a media story.
The Challenge
Teams of two are asked to complete the TV/Video production process from start to finish. Each team will get a shooting brief, and from there will craft the storyline, write, shoot, dub, edit, and present a finished film. The duration of the films must be 2.5 minutes or less, including titles and credits. The team’s finished product will be judged on a number of criteria including:
● Production notes (storyboard, script, notes)
● Camera work (composition, camera angles and techniques technical operation)
● Audio visual (image quality, consistency, appropriate use of equipment, mix)
● Editing (transitions, music, sequence, special effects, within time limits)
● Story and overall impact (coherency, pacing and flow, storyline)
A team’s collaboration, time management, and problem solving skills will also be considered.
Challenge Requirements
1) Each team will arrive at the challenge prepared with at least some exposure and experience in the operation of a video camera, as well as the use of video editing software such as iMovie, Final Cut or Windows Movie Maker.
2) Each team will be provided with a shooting brief, which will outline the theme of the movie, as well as three items that must appear in the film (these items can be anything - a location, a phrase, a physical item; they do not have to be prominent
in the film).
3) All music used in the films must be copyright cleared or licensed under Creative Commons, such as music available through freemusicarchive.org. Proper credit must be given at the end of your video.
4) Each team must provide their own video camera, laptop, SD card/USB stick, computer connection cord/adapter (if needed), batteries, and headphones. If desired, competitors may also bring one microphone with cable. No other equipment including lighting gear, mixers or special lenses will be permitted.
Please note that no iPads, tablets, cell phones, media devices or mp3 players are to be used in this challenge.
After Note to TV/Video Production Challenge Lead Teachers/Coaches:
As no technical equipment will be provided by the competition, please review the challenge requirements and ensure that each team has all the appropriate equipment. Teams will be provided with a shooting brief on the day of the competition outlining the theme of the movie, and three items that must appear in the film. All planning, production, and editing will happen on the day of the event. Please be aware of other competitors who do not wish to be recorded or photographed. Only props found on site are to be used during videotaping.
