: The competition will begin at 9:30am. February 29, 2024, at the Dynamic Design Salon- St. Lawrence College. All travel arrangements should be made by students prior to competition day. Lunch will be provided, followed by an award ceremony.Notes to the participants

Purpose of the Contest:

To allow students the opportunity to demonstrate their creative skills and knowledge of Hairstyling, to their peers, industry professionals and potential employers. To provide students with input from industry professionals which ensure that today’s market demands are met within school curriculum requirements.

Describe the Event:

The competition will allow the new stylists to demonstrate their technical skills and creative ability in the following

Long Hair Up with Wishes.

Naturally Textured Hair Design with Wishes

Commercial Haircut with Wishes

WISHES:

Wishes will be determined by independent Project Designers. Competitors will receive the wishes for the look just before the start of the competition the day of. Wishes may come in the form of picture(s) and /or mannequin as per the Project Designers. Competitors must follow the wishes to the best of their abilities.

Skills and Knowledge to be tested:

Practical use of tools equipment, processes and best practices found in the industry.

Oral Presentation of the task and the language skills used in this industry.

Written interpretation of directions and diagrams

Creativity in solving problems presented.

Demonstration of skills with spectators and time limits

Safety practiced by the participants affecting themselves and others around them.

Teamwork: (where applicable), combination of practical skill, communication, and leadership.

Clothing Requirements:

Contestants should wear clean and all black salon attire, closed toe shoes.

The competitor must supply and wear the appropriate clothing and protective gear:

** Please note: Failure to wear personal protective equipment in an appropriate manner will result in loss of marks. More than one warning may result in competitor disqualified from contest.

No inappropriate slogans or messages

No Cell phone or texting

No talking

Equipment and Materials:

Provided by the Competitor:

Three competition mannequins as follows:

  • 18-24’ mannequin for long hair up-do

  • 16-18’ mannequin for commercial hair cut

  • 6-10’ mannequin for naturally textured hair design

  • Tools and supplies necessary for completion of all services outlined in scope sheets.

  • All hand- held blow dryers do not exceed 1600 watts.

  • All curling irons not to exceed 125 v or 60 Hz.

Please note that mannequin stands must accommodate an opening mount of 1 ½.”  Live models will not be required, as all services administered on the two required mannequins.

Notes to teacher/advisor: Please ensure any tools or equipment used for the event are checked before the student arrives.

Extension cords must have all ground and live plugs secure, free of nicks, frays or other defects that may present a safety hazard to the competitor and others.

If students are using cordless drills, cameras, or computers, please ensure they are charged and ready to use.

Cleanup of the entire work area is mandatory for all competitors and be built into the time allotted to complete the task.

Provided by the Committee:

-     Non-hydraulic chair

- Electrical power

- Table-top space and mirror

-     Shampoo Sinks

Contestants may bring other tools not listed but must be approved by the Committee Chair in advance. Please ensure that all of tools students are bringing are labeled with their names or are identifiable as to which school they belong to.

Evaluation: (samples of the judging criteria a student could expect)

POINT BREAKDOWN/120 TOTAL

Point breakdown as follows:

  • All judging performed according to a 120-total point system.

  • The contestants with the highest combined points from the three tests will be the winner, the second highest mark placed second, and the third highest mark will be third.

  • Demerits given for any rule infractions.

Ladies Up- Style

Test #1 Up-Style

: 1.5 hoursDuration

: A creative Up Style design performed on a long hair mannequin.  If mannequin is layered, the hair from the top and crown should be a minimum of 16 cm (about 6.3 in)/6.25". A light fringe or bang may be incorporated.Rationale

Hair may be set by: Roller set, Blow- dry, Curling Iron, Flat Iron, shaping, pin curls or any combination of any of the above.

Hair must not be pre-combed before this competition begins.

Hair must be completely dry, as this competition will begin with a thorough brushing of the mannequin.

Bobby pins and hairpins may be used.

Naturally Textured Hair Design With WishesTest #2

: 2 hoursDuration

:  Naturally Textured Hair Design will be a protective design meant to preserve natural hair and maintain hydration. The competitor will follow the project design which will be provided with a picture(s) and/ or mannequin; area(s) that remain unseen will be the competitor’s choice of design while staying within the components used per the category. The competitor must respect the client’s wishes. End results must reflect industry standards.Rationale

YOUR WORKING SPACE

• Floor must be wiped as soon as there is water or product spillage.

• Hair must be removed immediately after haircutting and placed in appropriate bins.

• Sharp instruments (scissors, razors, blades) are manipulated with caution and stored properly.

• Sinks must be cleaned after use, otherwise you will be asked to return and clean

• Electrical tools such as irons should never be in contact with flammable products.

• Electrical cords must be in good order and undamaged. They should never be in contact or in proximity of water.

Wishes may come in the form of picture(s) or mannequin as per the Project Designers. Competitors must follow the wishes to the best of their abilities.

COMMERCIAL HAIRCUT WITH WISHES (1.5 HOURS)

Commercial Colour & Haircut will be a reflection of a fashion forward wearable design.

The competitor must follow the project design which will be provided with a picture(s) and or a mannequin. The design must reflect the picture /mannequin provided. All areas completed per the picture/mannequin; area(s) that remain unseen will be the competitor’s choice of design while staying within the components used as per the category. The competitor must respect the client’s wishes. End result must reflect industry standards.

REPORT TO FLOOR

• The competitor has the option of the mannequin’s hair to start wet or dry.Time will be given to wash after Test 1 if using 1 mannequin to complete both tasks.

• Mannequin must be draped.

HAIR LENGTH

• Absolutely no pre-cutting prior to the competition allowed.

• 18-24” mannequin

• Mannequin (May re-use mannequin from long hair up competition.

. HAIRCUT

• All hairdressing/cutting tools are allowed.

• Must respect client wishes.

CLOTHING & MAKEUP

• No dressing of the mannequin is allowed

• No makeup to be applied before, during or after the competition.
