Scope

 Students will demonstrate the painting skills involved in the automotive collision repair industry. Each competitor’s comprehension of auto refinishing repair terms, procedures and their ability to perform these tasks in a safe and professional manner will be evaluated.PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST:

Duration of contest

8:30 -2:30 pm6 hours at N.D.S.S.

Competitors will be judged on their general knowledge of the automotive refinishing process with particular attention paid to:

Skills and Knowledge to be tested

• Prepare and refinish a plastic bumper

- Including the application of filler repair materials

- the application of cleaners, primer and paint

• Prepare and finish a small fender dent

- Including the application of repair materials

- the application of cleaners, primer and base paint

- the application of clear coat

  • Read and follow written instructions

- including MSDS and TSB provided by the competition event chair

Equipment materials and clothing

Equipment and material provided by Limestone District School Board

  • Waterborne technology will be used for this competition

  • All clear coat products will be low V.O.C.

  • Work table

  • Protective equipment other than individual protective gear (PPE)

  • Spray guns (Supplied by SATA)

  • Air supplied respirators

  • Disposable gloves (Nitrile)

  • Dual action sanders and supplies

  • Blow gun

  • Hazardous spill kit

  • Fresh air Respiratory protection

Equipment and material provided by the competitor

  • Personal painters tools, blocks, applicators, file boards

  • Painters coveralls

  • Work place coveralls

Safety Equipment

List of required personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by competitors

  • Safety Glasses with non-tinted clear

  • Coveralls

  • CSA approved Safety shoes

  • Safety Gloves

  • Welding helmet

  • Dust Mask

  • Leather gloves

  • Hearing protection

  • Charcoal filter respirator

Assessment

To be completed by judges selected by the competition chair

Repair a plastic bumper including use of material 200

Refinish plastic bumper including clean-up of work area using base/clear paint 300

Repair a dent on steel panel 200

Refinish steel panel using base/clear paint 300

Note to competitors; inappropriate use of material and or safety equipment may lead to point deduction and or disqualification.
