Notes to the participants:

St Lawrence College Wood Shop (South end of shop)

All participants must have basic knowledge of construction operations to safely compete in this event.

Purpose of Competition:

To evaluate each competitor’s preparation for employment and to recognize outstanding students for their excellence and professionalism in the field of carpentry. To evaluate each competitor’s ability to organize and execute a given working plan accurately and safely using generally accepted carpentry practices.

Skills and Knowledge to be tested:

Competitors will be challenged to produce a project using the mitre saw, table saw, jointer, router, drill press, bandsaw, in combination with bench work and while demonstrating a competency of measurement tools. The need for students to work safely will be a priority and students will be judged on safe work practices during all activities in this event. No Interviews are required at this competition

Practical -  90%

• Safe use of required hand and power tools in scope
• Competency in reading construction plans and specifications
• Competency in using appropriate systems of measurement
• Ability to apply planning, organization and time management skills to compete the project within the given time
• The selection and application of sound work practices and assembly techniques, in the building of a residential framing construction project
• Quality, accuracy and thoroughness of workmanship
• General work attitude and housekeeping
• Project Sequencing and Completion

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY – 10%

• P.P.E. required
• Safe work procedures
• Basic hazard awareness
• Machine equipment operation competency

Note to teacher/adviser:

ALL competitors are required to be familiar with and able to demonstrate the correct use of the equipment needed to build this project. Please ensure that they are familiar with the use of a circular saw, hand drill, safe use of chisels, compound mitre saw, table saw, countersink drill bits, and plug cutting bits.

The Project:

Students will be given a drawing, a set of specifications and a selection of materials. They will be asked to cut, layout, assemble finish (expectation, clear coat ready) a residential construction project.

Clothing Requirements:

The competitor must supply and wear the appropriate clothing and protective gear:

• Safety eye wear (must include side shields) and hearing protection
• Long pants and T-shirt (NO muscle shirts or long, oversized shirts)
• No loose baggy clothing
• No inappropriate slogans or messages
• No jewelry
• No Hats or Caps
• No school identification to be worn
• NO CELL PHONES ARE ALLOWED IN THE CONTEST AREA!

** Please note: Failure to wear personal protective equipment in an appropriate manner will result in loss of marks.  More than one warning may result in competitor being disqualified from contest. Competition judges will have final authority on matters of safety.

• Work apron or belt (if desired)
• Cordless or corded drill
• Tape measure
• Pencils, erasers
• Square -  bevel, speed and framing
• Hammer
• Utility knife
• Flush cut saw
• Nail set
• 5” Orbital sander
• Circular saw
• Mallet
• 1”, ¾”, ½” Chisel
• #8, #6 countersink bit
• #8 Plug cutter
• Robertson screwdrivers
• Ruler
• 2 – 2’ clamps
• Circular compass
• Extension cord (properly maintained and legal)

Contestants may bring other tools not listed but they must be approved by Committee Chair in advance.

Please ensure that all tools the students are bringing are labeled with their names or are identifiable as to which school they belong to.

• All Materials required to complete project

eg. -  wood, glue, screws, nails, sandpaper/5” orbital sandpaper, rags

Clean-up of the entire work area is mandatory for all competitors and will take place before the judged portion of the competition. Judges will not mark projects of any student who is not present during the clean-up portion of the competition.

No project will be marked of any student who is disqualified. (see comp rules above)

No student will be excused until clean-up activities are complete.

Project Plans and an Exemplar:

• Plans will be available on competition day.
• Exemplar will be available to all before and during the competition

A minimum score of 60% will be required to receive any ribbon or medal or to be eligible to advance to the Skills Ontario Regional Competition.

As the rules state, there are no ties. If the score is even after the contest closes. Competition Judges will have final authority of which contestant receives the gold medal.

Instructions for student participation in the Regional Event will be given at this time.
