Health & Wellness

Health and Wellness at GREC
Health and Wellness is an SHSM program where students can choose their focus by the type of major credits they select. Students selecting more science and physical education courses would focus on health care or fitness while students selecting more social science courses would focus more on family services and child care. We are fortunate to have many community partners who provide opportunities for students to learn in various settings and practice the skills we have learned in class, and developed through the certifications such as leadership, communication and teamwork. Being a K-12 site also provides opportunities to practice skills in our own building. We have a very high success rate and a number of our graduates have earned recognition and experienced great success as they purse their desired post-secondary program and employment.
Academy of Hair Program
The Academy of Hair program is an SHSM program designed to foster a successful and long-lasting career in the field of hair styling and colour application. With an increased demand for hair services, the Hair Apprenticeship Program will allow you to explore a career path in a rapidly growing industry. The HAP program strives to provide students with theory and hands-on practical knowledge which includes professional ethics of the industry, health and safety practices, and successful business and operational skills. Students refine their skills of client service and expand their knowledge of various application processes for hair services. Over 2 years, students will complete 16 workplace credits, 1500 hours required by the Ministry of Trades and College and be placed in a co-op at a professional salon. Through this SHSM Health and Wellness program, students will have the opportunity to participate in industry specific certifications to be able to complete all the requirements to obtain a specialized Red Seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students of the HAP program have gone on to have a successful career as hair stylist and or establish their own hair salons, in and out of our community. Upon completion of the program, students can write the licensing test to become a licensed hairstylist.

Co-Op

Cooperative education provides secondary school students with a wide range of rigorous learning opportunities connected to communities outside the school. It is designed to recognize and respond to the diversity of Ontario’s student population, and it can engage all students.

In cooperative education, students learn in safe, culturally responsive environments in the community, and they are actively involved in determining what they learn, how they learn, when and where they learn, and how they demonstrate their learning.

Students must complete a minimum 2 credit coop in a related course. This can include summer coop and paid coop placements.

Summer coop can happen immediately after a student completes Grade 10.

A student becomes a Grade 11 student July 1st after they complete Grade 10.

Summer coop is a very good option for students who worry that they won't have room in their timetable in Grade 11 or 12 to take two credits of coop.
