Scope
PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST: Students will demonstrate the safety procedures and skills required to be successful in the heavy off-road equipment industry. Each competitor’s comprehension of equipment repair terms, procedures and their ability to perform these tasks in a safe and professional manner will be evaluated.
Duration of contest
6 hours at NDSS…. 8:30 -2:30 pm
PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST
to provide competitors with the opportunity to demonstrate both practical and theoretical application of their skills and task knowledge within the Heavy Equipment industry relevant to:
∙ Trades practices, diesel engines, fuel systems, electrical/electronics, fluid power, drive trains, steering/suspension and brakes.
∙ Knowledge and application of applicable health and safety regulations.
∙ Diagnostic and problem solving skills as outlined by original equipment manufacturers
SAFETY
Safety is a priority at Limestone Skills
At the discretion of the judges and technical chairs, any competitor can be removed from the competition site for not having the proper safety equipment and/or not acting in a safe manner.
1. It is mandatory for all competitors to wear CSA approved eyewear (including side shields for prescription eyewear).
2. It is mandatory for all competitors to wear CSA approved footwear.
3. Jewellery such as rings, bracelets and necklaces or any items deemed unsafe by competition judges shall be removed.
4. Proper shop attire is to be worn (no loose straps, baggy sleeves). Any attire that isdeemed unsafe by competition judges will not be permitted.
*Competitors will not be permitted to compete until they have the needed safety equipment. Competition judges will have final authority on matters of safety. Competitors must show competence in the use of tools and/or equipment outlined in this scope and can be removed at the discretion of the judges and technical chairs if he/she does not display tool and/or equipment competency
Skills and Knowledge to be tested
∙ To demonstrate skills and knowledge in diagnosing, adjusting and repairing off road equipment or components following manufacturers’ recommended procedures.
∙ To perform work in a safe and competent manner.
∙ Inspect and test components and circuits
∙ Repair or replace off road equipment components as required.
∙ All phases of measurement will be in metric S.I. or Imperial standard
Equipment materials and clothing
Equipment and material provided by Limestone District School Board
- All shop tools and test equipment
- Heavy equipment
- All shop manuals and schematics.
- PPE ( hard hats, vests, latex gloves)
- Laptops with proprietary software
- All product specific tooling.
- Writing hardware Please Note: Tools and materials may change based on availability.
Equipment and material provided by the competitor
- Competitors must bring their own safety work boots and glasses, work gloves
- Résumé for job interview portion of competition
- Snacks
- Refillable water bottle
- Work place coveralls
Assessment
To be completed by judges selected by the competition chair
Trades Practices: 19 %
- Inspection and testing
- Drilling and tapping
- Precision measuring
- Disassembly and assembly
- Interpreting manufacturer’s documentation
- Adjustment and repair procedures
- Verifying repairs and procedures
Electrical / Electronics: 19%
- Diagnostics and problem solving using diagnostic test equipment
- Inspection and testing following manufacturer’s diagnostic procedures
- Analyzing mechanical and electrical/electronic performance problems
- Disassembly and assembly of alternator and starter
- Interpreting manufacturer’s documentation for testing and repair
- Adjustment testing and repair procedures as outlined in manufacturer’s documentation
- Verifying adjustments and repairs
Fluid Power Systems 19%
Diagnostics and problem solving using hydraulic diagnostic test equipment
- Inspection and testing following manufacturer’s recommended diagnostic procedures
- Analyzing mechanical, electrical/hydraulic performance problems
- Disassembly and assembly of hydraulic components
- Precision measuring o Interpreting manufacturer’s documentation for testing and repair of hydraulic systems
- Adjustment testing and repair procedures as outlined in manufacturer’s documentation
- Verifying hydraulic adjustments and repairs
Drive Train Systems: 19%
- Diagnostics and problem solving techniques using drive train test equipment
- Inspection and testing following manufacturer’s recommended diagnostic procedures
- Analyzing mechanical / electrical, drive train performance problems
- Disassembly, assembly and adjustment of drive train components
- Precision measuring o Interpreting manufacturer’s documentation for testing and repair of drive train systems
- Adjustment, testing and repair procedures as outlined in manufacturer’s documentation
- Verifying drive train adjustments and repairs
Fuel Systems: 19%
- Fault Diagnostics and problem solving using diagnostic test equipment
- Inspection and testing following manufacturer’s diagnostic procedures
- Analyzing mechanical and electronic performance problems
- Disassembly and assembly of fuel system components
- Interpreting manufacturer’s documentation o Adjustment testing and repair procedures
- Verifying repairs
Job interview 5%
- Competitor to supply current resume
RULES, REGULATIONS
During the contest, no one will have access to the contest site except the Technical Committee Members, Judges, Skills Ontario staff and Competitors. Spectators, including teacher/advisors, will be provided a viewing area if possible.
Immediate disqualification may occur at the discretion of the technical chair if a competitor displays any one of the following:
- Acts inappropriately
- Shows disregard for the safety of themselves or those around them
- Breaks the established rules and regulations including
- Uses equipment or material that is not permitted o Dishonest conduct (cheating, plagiarism)
- Speaks with those outside the contest area
- Arrives to the contest site late
